Brighton and Hove Council announced that on the 31st March, the new hire bikes will be appearing on the streets as a phased reintroduction. The bike hire will be ran by Beryl using their bike design which is lighter, easier to use and more sleek than the previous bike hire scheme which was ran by Social Bikes which ended in December 2022.
Beryl is an established bike and scooter hire company in the UK with successful schemes in other towns and cities such as Plymouth, Southampton. Portsmouth, London, Birmingham & others.
Phase 1 of the launch scheme will see the launch of 75 e-bikes from 19 hubs along the seafront & city centre, once the launch scheme is fully rolled out by Q3 2023 there will be 780 total bikes, with 468 of those being e-bikes which is 200 more than the previous scheme, in addition there will be 15 new hubs which will be consulted on in the coming months.
West Sussex County Council, or Adur/Arun Councils have not announced anything recently regarding their proposed bike share hire scheme, or any potential to use Beryl bikes too which would allow interoperability between the adjoining council areas.
