One of the smaller schemes under the “County Council’s school Active Travel initiatives” is to provide a new toucan crossing across the A283 adjacent to the Old Toll Bridge. This has now been given the green light after consultation earlier this year and should be constructed in Spring of next year.
A crossing here has been long overdue as those using The Old Toll Bridge across to Lancing & Worthing as well as those coming along the Downs Link from Steyning have to cross the A283 to gain access into Shoreham.
During the Active Travel Fund Tranche 1, WSCC installed a dropped kerb across the A283 here, to make crossing the road easier, although not safer. When this scheme was removed a few months after the dropped kerb was replaced with a full height kerb again. This scheme will now provide a signal controlled crossing here as well as rekerbing the bus stop and resurfacing the adjacent area.
