Detailed consultation on A259 Shoreham – Brighton cycleway to replace NCN2

Last month West Sussex County Council launched a second consultation for a new cycle track running beside the A259 to connect Ferry Bridge at Shoreham-by-Sea to the Brighton & Hove border. Work on creating designs for this cycleway have been in the works for over 5 years, and is now in the public consultation stage of detailed designs.

It is hoped that funded for the cycle track can be obtained by S106 developer contributions for the development of the waterfront directly adjacent to the proposed scheme, along with further funding from grants like the Active Travel Fund.

The plan would be to reallocate road space, and obtain additional land on the Southern side of the road to make the A259’s carriageway 6.5m wide, with a 3m cycleway on the southern side and footways on both sides of the road, where space is constrained, there would be sections of shared foot&cycleway.

A consultation held in Spring of 2022 showed that 80% of respondents were is favour of improvements along route with 70% supporting segregated space for cyclists.

The plans

The consultation closes on the 27th February,
