Next week at the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee, councillor will consider a report on deliver school streets to all eligible infant, junior & primary schools, with the next 6 being implemented next year.

The approach to school streets is set out in the report which has learnt from the closures which were implemented in September 2020.

The next 6 have been prioritised as the criteria of their location, complaints of illegal parking & road safety concerns have favoured them. These school streets should be delivered in 2021/2022:

  • Queen’s Park Primary School
  • Westdene Primary School
  • St Mary’s Catholic Primary School
  • Downs Infant School
  • Downs Junior School
  • Hove Junior School (Portland Road Site)

It is proposed that school streets going forward would be timed based restrictions rather than permanent, most of the current school streets will have changes to them to convert them to timed based.

Changes to the Traffic Management Act 2004 are due to take place later this year which would allow highway authorities outside of London to use ANPR camera to automatically enforce these restrictions. Automatic enforcement of timed based restrictions seem to be favoured over permanent restrictions.
