Western Road & Churchill Square scheme starts with bus diversion for 18 months

This month works started on Western Road which will see the whole corridor between the Clocktower and Montpelier Road rebuilt. The aims of the scheme is to make the road easier to cross for pedestrians, as well as provide a smoother ride for buses & cyclists.

The traffic signals at the junction with Dyke Road will be removed, and replaced with puffin crossings with the aim to reduce journey times for bus users & pedestrians. The rest of Western Road will gain a central narrow median making it safer for pedestrians to cross at any point, the existing traffic islands dotted along the road have already been removed. Most of the footway will also be relaid along with carriageway being rebuilt entirely to fix long standing issues with the smoothness of the road surface.

The scheme will also increase connectivity to surrounding roads for cyclists, where the side roads are currently closed to all traffic.

As the works take place, Western Road has been made one-way Westbound for all road traffic, buses are now using Upper North Street to travel East.
