The proposed 18-month project to redesign the public realm at the Old Stenie on the Southern end of the A23 in Brighton is reported to start construction in Spring of this year.
The project will move both directions of the A23 onto the Eastern side of the gardens, with the western side having a two-way cycle track which will become part of NCN Route 20, as well as bus stops which will make the whole area more accessible rather than feeling like being in the middle of a large roundabout.
The works will also involve replacing the roundabout with the A259 with a traffic signal controlled junction with dedicated pedestrian & cycle facilities which will make access to the pier and seafront easier, whilst still retaining similar levels of capacity to other traffic.
The whole scheme is now expected to cost £13 million and is expected to take 18 months to complete, so should be finished by the end of 2024.
